The CARFAX 250 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) on Saturday, Aug. 16 again was the only carbon neutral stock car race for the second year in a row. Through a partnership with The Conservation Fund, CARFAX offset all carbon emissions generated from the race, including the energy use at the venue, gasoline used by the race cars during the race, employee and fan travel, hotel stays, and camping generators. As a result, The Conservation Fund will plant more than 4,300 native trees at Louisiana’s Red River National Wildlife Refuge. Over their lifetime, these bottomland hardwood and cypress stands will trap an estimated 4,300 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from the atmosphere.
CARFAX offset more than 4,200 tons of carbon emissions from last year’s event at MIS, making it the first carbon neutral stock car event in history.
MIS and The Conservation Fund have partnered with CARFAX in support of this year’s effort. To symbolize the joint initiative and commemorate Michigan International Speedway’s 40th anniversary this season, CARFAX and MIS will plant 40 trees outside the racetrack. The trees will be planted at the speedway’s Brookfest Acres Campground.
The first tree, a Cleveland pear tree, was dedicated by (pictured from left to right) Michigan International Speedway President Roger Curtis, CARFAX Communications Director Larry Gamache, and Rex Boner, vice president of The Conservation Fund, on Friday, Aug. 15.
The racetrack in Brooklyn, Mich., hosted the CARFAX 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and 3M Performance 400 presented by Bondo NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Aug. 16-17, 2008.
